This lengthy, flagship two-door is likely concealing a V12 beneath its bonnet
Aston Martin is experiencing a streak of success as it substantially revamps and reimagines its two-door sports cars and grand tourers consecutively. We had the opportunity to experience the new DB12 just last year; a fresh Vantage hit the market mere weeks ago, and now the high-priced DBS is undergoing scrutiny.
Spotting spy images of Aston conducting tests on the next-generation DBS comes as no surprise, though – the previous iteration has concluded, culminating with the limited-production DBS 770 Ultimate. This new DBS (anticipated in both coupe and convertible Volante iterations) already appears to share certain visual elements with the DB12, particularly the broad, slotted grille that dominates its front. While the headlights remain concealed, hints of LED illumination suggest the presence of new headlight modules.
Regarding the engine, Aston is concealing the vents on this test vehicle, rumored to house its V12 powerplant. Presumably, it will be an upgraded iteration of the 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 featured in the outgoing DBS, with the engine itself likely serving as one of the primary distinctions between the DBS and DB12 now that the latter exclusively offers a twin-turbo V8.
The DBS's elongated side profile appears familiar, although the camouflage likely masks fresh bodywork and rear pillar designs. A modified quad exhaust setup is visible, protruding from what seems to be a revised rear bumper and diffuser. However, Aston has concealed the upper portions with misleading camouflage – while the ducktail spoiler appears sleek, its appearance may differ once the coverings are removed.
The most significant changes are anticipated within the DBS's interior. Similar to the DB12 and Vantage, expect a redesigned center stack, Aston Martin-crafted infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and an aesthetically pleasing center console adorned with tactile buttons and switches. These updates should effectively bring the DBS into the contemporary era of automotive interiors, as the outgoing design seemed reminiscent of the early 2010s.
The exact unveiling date for Aston's new DBS remains uncertain, but given the advanced stage of this prototype, a debut within the 2024 calendar year wouldn't be surprising.
